Gingival Recontouring

ARE YOU UNHAPPY WITH THE CONTOUR OF YOUR GUMLINE OR THE LENGTH OF YOUR TEETH?

Our clinics across Madison can reshape your smile in as little as one visit.

Your smile is one of the first things others notice about you. If you feel that you have a “gummy” smile, uneven gum line, or “long” teeth, talk to your Dental Health Associates dentist to find the right solution for you.

Gingival Recontouring

Below are two common scenarios for which our patients often seek gingival recontouring treatment.

Gummy smile / uneven gum line

“My gums show too much when I smile or talk.”

During this procedure (gingivectomy or crown lengthening), your Dental Health Associates periodontist or dentist will remove excess gum tissue to expose more of the crown of the tooth. This procedure may involve the use of laser and local anesthetic to numb the tissue. Your gum line may also be sculpted to give your smile a more uniform look.

Long Teeth / Exposed Roots

“My teeth seem too long. I think they make me look old.”

Gum recession can cause a tooth root to become exposed, making your teeth appear too long. Whether caused by tooth brushing, abnormal mouth habits, or periodontal disease, exposed roots can be sensitive to temperatures and touching, and are more prone to further toothbrush abrasion or wear. Soft tissue grafts may be able to cover the root surfaces, reduce further gum recession, and protect against root surface decay.

Gingival Recontouring FAQs

How much of the teeth are covered by gums is largely genetic. In some cases, certain health conditions and prescription drugs can cause the gums to cover more of the teeth. On the other hand, gums that don’t cover much of the teeth at all could be a sign of gum recession, which can lead to other significant health concerns like tooth loss and decay.

Eat cool and soft food, and avoid any and all foods with seeds. You should use pain relievers only as directed by your doctor, and avoid aspirin because it can cause bleeding. Follow your doctor’s directions for brushing your teeth, and any other directions they give.
