Family or General dentistry involves the maintenance and upkeep of the whole mouth. We recommend a routine cleaning every six months, starting around age three, along with an exam by your regular dentist. If pictures of the teeth are necessary to diagnose dental decay or other problems, they are also taken at this time.

When permanent molars have erupted fully, your dentist may recommend sealants. Sealants are plastic material planted onto the tooth that coats the chewing surface and prevents bacteria from gather in the natural pits and grooves of the teeth. This helps to prevent decay during those cavity prone years.

If dental decay is found, the tooth could be restored with a filling that is either silver or tooth colored in nature. Your dentist can advise you on the benefits of each.

In some cases, your dentist may recommend a crown as the treatment of choice to restore your tooth. This is a cap or covering that binds the tooth together preventing fracture and also replaces missing tooth structure due to fracture or decay.

Your general dentist can do many other procedures to keep your mouth in great functioning order and to create a beautiful smile too. Read on for more of these procedures.
