Prevent Decay with Dental Sealants

What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are a safe, effective, and easy way to prevent tooth decay. A common place for decay to start is in the groove of a tooth where germs can settle and it's hard for a toothbrush to reach. Dental sealants are generally applied to the biting surface of back teeth (molars) to seal over the groove and protect it from cavities.

Do dental sealants have any benefits?

Dental sealants have been used as cavity protection for over 50 years with great success. Studies have shown up to an 80% reduction in cavity risk (versus a tooth that has no dental sealant).

Who should have sealants?

Generally, tooth sealants are placed on adult teeth. Children can have dental sealants placed after their first permanent molars have erupted, which usually happens around the age of 6. Your dentist may recommend another set of dental sealants when second permanent molars erupt, typically around the age of 12. Dental sealants can also be used on baby teeth if there's a high risk of tooth decay.

How are sealants applied?

Applying dental sealants is quick and pain free. First, the tooth is cleaned using a tooth polish and cleanser. Next, the dental sealant is painted on the tooth. Lastly, a light is used to harden the material. After your appointment, you can eat, drink, and even brush right away.

Are sealants BPA free?

Dental sealants are made of composite resin, or white filling material, and don't contain any BPA.

Will tooth sealants stay on my teeth?

Yes, but tooth sealants can come off or wear down and should be checked by your dentist during routine dental exams and cleanings.
